Why Does a Car Overheat? Causes and Solutions

Overheating is one of the most common and dangerous car problems. When the engine temperature rises above the normal range (85–95 °C), serious damage can occur. Common causes include low coolant, thermostat failure, radiator blockage, water pump issues, or a faulty fan.

Possible Causes

  • Coolant leaks or low levels
  • Thermostat stuck closed
  • Water pump not circulating coolant
  • Radiator clogged with debris
  • Cooling fan not engaging
  • Blown head gasket

Fixes

  • Regularly check coolant and use antifreeze mix
  • Replace thermostat and water pump at service intervals
  • Clean or replace radiator if clogged
  • Inspect fan fuse, relay, and motor
  • If gasket failure is suspected, take the car to a mechanic immediately
