Why Does a Clutch Slip? Symptoms and Fixes

Why Does a Clutch Slip? Symptoms and Fixes

A slipping clutch occurs when engine revs rise but vehicle speed does not increase proportionally. The main cause is usually worn clutch friction material, but other components may also be responsible.

Possible Causes

  • Worn clutch disc (friction material thin)
  • Weak pressure plate not holding properly
  • Flywheel (dual mass) worn or damaged
  • Hydraulic system problems (fluid leak or air)
  • Bad driving habits (riding the clutch, holding on hills)

Fixes

  • Replace clutch kit (disc, pressure plate, release bearing)
  • Check and resurface flywheel if needed
  • Inspect hydraulic system, bleed or refill fluid
  • Adopt better driving habits
