Loss of Power in Diesel Cars – Reasons and Solutions

A loss of power in diesel cars is frustrating, especially when climbing hills or overtaking. The most common reasons are injector problems, fuel filter clogging, turbo issues, EGR valve faults, or a blocked DPF.

Possible Causes

  • Dirty or faulty injectors
  • Clogged fuel filter restricting flow
  • Turbo leaks or damaged turbocharger
  • EGR valve stuck open due to soot build-up
  • Dirty air filter
  • MAF (mass air flow) sensor failure
  • Clogged diesel particulate filter (DPF)

Fixes

  • Professional injector cleaning or replacement
  • Change the fuel filter every 20–30k km
  • Inspect turbo hoses for leaks, check turbo oiling
  • Remove and clean the EGR valve
  • Replace air filter if dirty
  • Clean or replace MAF sensor
  • Regenerate or clean DPF
