Car Cranks but Won’t Start – Common Causes and Fixes

You turn the key, the starter motor cranks, but the engine refuses to fire. This issue is usually related to battery voltage, fuel delivery, ignition components, or sensors.

Possible Causes

  • Weak battery (starter works but spark is weak)
  • Faulty fuel pump or relay
  • Clogged fuel filter
  • Bad spark plugs or ignition coil
  • Crankshaft or camshaft position sensor failure
  • Injector malfunction
  • Immobilizer not recognizing the key

Fixes

  • Test battery voltage (should be 12V+ at rest)
  • Listen for fuel pump prime when ignition is turned on
  • Replace fuel filter if clogged
  • Check spark plugs and coils, replace if worn
  • Scan for fault codes with an OBD tool
  • Test crankshaft sensor signals
  • Try spare key if immobilizer issue is suspected
